Why Fatherhood Matters

Father's Day is a celebration of fathers and fatherhood, designed to honor and appreciate the contributions that fathers make to their families and society.

Fathers can have a great impact on their children's lives. By being involved, supportive, and engaged, fathers can help their children thrive and reach their full. Overall, healthy guidance is important to children because it helps them learn and develop, fosters self-confidence, addresses developmental needs, encourages positive behaviors, and provides a sense of security. By providing guidance and support to children, we can help them have the best opportunities to transition into healthy, happy, and well-adjusted adults.

There are several statistics that highlight the importance of fathers in their children's lives:

  • Child Development: According to research, children who have involved fathers are more likely to have better social-emotional outcomes and cognitive development, as well as higher academic achievement and self-confidence.

  • Mental Health: Children with involved fathers have lower rates of depression and anxiety, as well as higher levels of self-esteem and emotional regulation.

  • Legal Issues: Research has shown that children who grow up without a father in the home are at greater risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system.

  • Positive Parenting: Fathers who are involved, nurturing, and engaged in positive parenting practices have children who are better adjusted and exhibit fewer behavioral problems.

  • Gender Equality: Fathers play an important role in shaping their children's gender identity, with research showing that fathers who exhibit and model equitable ideas regarding gender roles and/or expectations have children who exhibit more positive attitudes towards gender equality.

  • Academic Success: Children with involved fathers are more likely to have better academic outcomes, including higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates.

Even if you don't hold the specific title of father, a positive male role model can have a tremendous impact on the development and well-being of young people. At CHGW we're fortunate enough to have qualified, dedicated, and inspired male advocates who serve and work on behalf of our youth. By serving as positive role models, creating diversity and balance within our organization, improving impactful outcomes, supporting social-emotional development, and providing career opportunities, male guidance can help create a more equitable and successful system of #RelentlessSupport, #UnconditionalLove, and #AbsoluteRespect for all our youth.

Here are some ways that a positive male role model can benefit youth:

  • Provides Guidance: Male role models can provide guidance and support to young people, helping them make positive choices and navigate difficult situations.

  • Encourages Positive Identity Development: Positive male role models can help young people understand and embrace their own identity, encouraging them to develop a strong sense of self and self-worth.

  • Models Healthy Relationships: Male role models who exhibit healthy and respectful relationships can help young people develop positive relationship skills, including communication, trust, and empathy.

  • Demonstrates Responsibility: Positive male role models model responsibility and accountability, teaching young people the importance of taking ownership of their actions and decisions.

  • Fosters Personal Growth: Male role models who encourage personal growth and exploration can help young people develop their interests and discover new talents and abilities.

  • Promotes Resilience: Male role models can help young people develop resilience and coping skills, which can help them overcome adversity and deal with life's challenges.

  • Inspires Hope: Positive male role models can inspire hope in young people by demonstrating that success and happiness are achievable through hard work, determination, and perseverance.

Sometimes mentors, big brothers, parents, guardians, and/or caregivers may struggle to identify the most positive ways to guide, support, and build self-confidence within the youth around them. Whether you’re a parent, mentor, youth advocate, or anything in between, it’s always a chance to improve your skills.
